SunRay Park racing season up a record 46%

The 2014 SunRay Park and Casino live racing season recorded one of its most successful meets ever with record gains in handle.

The 39-day stand which concluded on Sunday in Farmington, New Mexico yielded a staggering gain of 46% in total handle. Momentum was dynamic early on in the season, and the racing product attracted a national simulcast appeal. Total handle was nearly $5.5 million, up nearly $2 million from a similar campaign in 2013.

Even on-track numbers showed an increase of over 8% from last year. SunRay Park off-track handle surged upward nearly 52% from the corresponding 39-day meet last season.

Director of Racing Operations Lonnie Barber said, "We were very pleased with the response to our all-Thoroughbred Tuesday programs with two guaranteed pick 4 pools. Those days readily attracted out of state dollars. We also posted gains with our Freaky Fast Fridays cards which showcased all Quarter Horse cards. I'm particularly proud of the efforts of Racing Secretary Jim Collins and our new Simulcast Coordinator and Mutuels Manager Steve Fedunak."

SunRay Park's percentage increases should rank near the top of the nation's tracks in 2014. The energetic northwest New Mexico based track traditionally runs from mid-April through late June. Justin Evans, the third leading trainer in North America, successfully defended his crown as leading trainer.
